This week we’re talking about the elephant in the room, Drake combo decks, which have taken over MTGO. We also discuss a cool value based aristocrats list and try to brainstorm how combo can exist but not dominate pauper.
On this episode of ReBrew, Mike and I play his favorite deck: Pig Trinket! This is a grindy control deck that whose key cards are Trinket Mage, Sylvok Lifestaff, Grim Harvest, and a boatload of sacrifice creatures.
We go over the list in depth in both our video and our podcast, so I’ll keep this short and sweet. Essentially, the deck seeks to buy time with Sakura-Tribe Elder, Brindle Boar, and Fume Spitter, and then in the late game establishes a loop with Grim Harvest so that you can recur the sacrifice abilities over and over and over. Sylvok Lifestaff gains us life with each loop, and when the time is right we can set up a gigantic Crypt Rats turn or beat face with our larger creatures.
This deck may be three colors, but in practice it plays more like a mono black deck. We really only need one green or blue source most games, and most of our fetch effects are spent getting swamps to set up our Crypt Rats turn. The deck is incredibly grindy as you can see from the videos below, but if that style of control interests you I would say this is a very under rated deck and worthy of your consideration.
This week we talk about Eldritch Moon’s spoilers and what we think their effect on the format will be.
Deck tech this week is Eightsixeightsix’s Mardu Tortured Existence list. http://www.mtgo-stats.com/decks/38634
